When they are building house, when they are starting new business, or when they meet a partner, it is natural for Tibetans to use some sort of divination for advice. They call it Mo, although Mo is also known by westerners as dice divination method. All divination methods are connected with a spiritual practice. For example, if partners who are married don’t get along with each other, there is a practice prescribed as a remedy. Practice is also prescribed when asking for advice from an astrologer, or amulets can be given.
There are many methods that Tibetans are using for divination, and they are practiced within all four Tibetan buddhism major schools. Manjushri or Palden Lhamo dice divination, rosary divination, Dorje Yudronma’s mirror divination, dough ball divination, butter lamp divination, phurba (knife) divination, stones, dreams, reading the patterns of crown’s behavior …. there are so many of them.
The most important thing is that the motivation to practice divination is pure. As in all Tibetan buddhism meditation rituals and practices it is not done just for personal gain – it is done to bring relief of suffering for all sentient beings. Divination abilities could be inherited in the family, or a person should go through retreat under qualified master if she or he wants to practice divination.
